Erdogan: Barzani’s Decision On Holding Referendum Is Not A Positive Step For Iraq Unity

BAGHDAD – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the President of the Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani to retreat from the decision of the referendum scheduled in 25 of next September, describing the decision as a non-positive step to the unity of Iraq.

“This step is incorrect and not positive for the unity of Iraq, and a step that creates problems in the future of that country,” Erdogan said in a news conference in the German city of Hamburg on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

“We told our friend the president of the Kurdistan region, Massoud Barzani, so, we said this is a wrong way, and we called them to give it up, and we hope they give up the idea before holding the referendum; because the unity of Iraq is very important for us.”
