McGurk: Despite Our Observations, We Respect The Will Of Kurdistan People On The Referendum

BAGHDAD – US special envoy to the international coalition against the terrorist group Daesh, Brett McGurk said his country respected the will of the people of Kurdistan over the referendum, despite many observations on the issue.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said in a statement that Brett McGurk and his accompanying delegation met with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Nechirvan Barzani on Saturday evening, where he praised the Peshmerga forces in the war against terrorists and cooperation and coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army. He hoped that Erbil and Baghdad engaged in a serious dialogue to resolve the outstanding problems between the two sides, expressing his country’s readiness to contribute to this matter. ”

On the referendum of the people of Kurdistan, McGurk said that his country respects the will of this people despite the existence of many observations on this issue, highlighted the current situation in the region and Iraq, indicating that the solution of these problems need more talks and negotiations.

For his part, Barzani expressed his appreciation for the continued US support for the Kurdistan region in the war against terrorism, and expressed the readiness of the region to hold further negotiations and talks to resolve outstanding problems between the two sides.

On the referendum process, the Kurdistan Regional Government President pointed out that the self-determination of the people of Kurdistan is a legitimate and natural right, after all these sacrifices made by this people, in addition to the lack of any possibility of partnership because of the Iraqi government’s refusal to implement the constitution. ”
