Baquba A source in Diyala confirmed that the strategic reservoir of Hamrin Lake, on which more than 60% of Diyala’s regions depend on, has decreased from 3 billion m3 to 290 million m3, a decline that has not been witnessed in the governorate for more than two decades.
He told the correspondent of the National Iraqi News Agency / NINA /: “Large areas of orchards in Diyala are vulnerable to destruction in the Hamrin Basin, eastern Diyala and the outskirts of al-Khalis, due to the lack of water resources,” noting that drilling artesian wells is the best solution to confront drought and secure water in particular to agricultural areas suffering from scarcity. ”
He added, “Coordination continues with international organizations to drill model wells in areas without water purification stations and scattered areas far from rivers and streams.”
For his part, the Acting Mayor of Al-Muqdadiya, Hatem Al-Tamimi warned of a water crisis in the Hamrin Basin regions due to the decrease in the levels of the lake to levels close to drought, calling on the Ministry of Water Resources and the government to urgently intervene and coordinate with the Iranian side to strengthen Hamrin Lake, in addition to coordinating with the Kurdistan region to secure water releases from Darbandikhan and securing a basic aspect of water needs.
