Turan Meets UNAMI Mission And Stresses Importance Of Fairness And Transparency Of Early Parliamentary Elections

 

Kirkuk The head of the Iraqi Turkmen Front, Hassan Turan, stressed the importance of the integrity and transparency of the early parliamentary elections.

This came during his meeting at the headquarters of the United Nations mission in Baghdad, Ingibjörg Gísladóttir, Deputy Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs and Elections. During the meeting, they discussed the latest developments related to the early parliamentary elections next October.

The head of the Front welcomed Security Council Resolution No. 2576 of 2021, in which it called for increasing international monitoring of the Iraqi elections to prevent a recurrence of the fraud in the 2018 elections, which led to the instability of the political situation in Iraq.

The head of the front pointed to the need to attach utmost importance to the integrity and transparency of the elections in Kirkuk governorate, which revealed fraud in the recent parliamentary elections, and that the Board of Commissioners’ handling of the elections file in Kirkuk and the United Nations mission should be accurate, balanced and impartial, and the need to reconsider decisions related to Kirkuk governorate and focus international monitoring on the elections to ensure their transparency and not to repeat the same previous mistakes, and to assign the Kirkuk office to the Independent High Electoral Commission and its divisions to professional figures to increase voter confidence in its procedures and prevent fraud again.
