Baghdad The Legal Expert, Ali Al-Tamimi, called for activating the penalties for electoral campaigning.

Al-Tamimi said in a statement that the new election law No. 9 of 2020 dealt with electoral propaganda, starting from Article 22 to Article 37, with details and conditions, including that the date be set by a decision of the Commission, places of publicity, non-exploitation of state resources and buildings, and the prohibition of giving gifts. It ends 24 hours before the elections.

He added, “Articles 32 to 36 imposed corporal punishments and fines ranging from one year’s imprisonment to a fine of 25 million dinars as a maximum, affecting even entities, and it could even be exclusion.”

He explained, “the commission should prevent sectarian animosity and exclude every entity or person that promotes this so that it does not affect the election date on October 10.”
The legal expert stressed that these penalties, especially fines, need to be implemented in order for the propaganda to be in control.”
