Baghdad National Security Adviser Qassem al-Araji confirmed that the presence of a number of Iraqis in Al-Hol camp and leaving them unaddressed will have negative future repercussions on the country, indicating that their situation cannot be ignored.
Al-Araji explained in a statement that the Iraqis occupy more than half of the residents of Al-Hol camp, most of whom are women and children, and the inappropriate conditions in the camp could create a generation of extremist gangs that feed on violence and hostility, stressing that in this year (2021) serious incidents were reported inside the camp included many Iraqis.
With regard to the 400 Iraqis who returned from the camp, al-Araji stated that they are among the families that have been in a separate section of Al-Hol camp in Syria since 2017, and constitute the first batch of those who will return to Iraq in the coming months, indicating that all the returnees and those who will return in the future are from women and children, and the government subjects them to a security check before their return.
The National Security Adviser stressed that the Government of Iraq is committed to the safety of all Iraqis and will work to ensure the protection of its citizens, as well as its commitment to the safe reintegration of all Iraqis, through programs prepared for this purpose.
