Baghdad Parliament Speaker Mohammed Al-Halbousi affirmed Iraq’s keenness to consolidate its relations with the European Union and expand horizons of cooperation in various fields, praising the European Union’s efforts to support Iraq during its war against the terrorist gangs of ISIS.
During his meeting with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the European Union, Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell and his accompanying delegation, Al-Halbousi pointed out the importance of supporting Iraq with the file of returning the displaced people and achieving stability for the returnees to their homes, through reconstruction and provision of services to the liberated areas.
With regard to the file of the upcoming early parliamentary elections, the Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed the importance of the European Union’s role in monitoring the Iraqi elections, to ensure their integrity, and to create confidence among citizens by choosing their representatives who express their aspirations, and to motivate them for broad participation.
For his part, Borrell clarified the European Union’s support to Iraq in all fields, especially in the file of returning the displaced people, stressing their support for the upcoming elections by sending monitoring teams from the European Commission and Parliament in order to ensure the safety of their conduct.
A statement by Al-Halbousi’s office indicated that during the meeting, they discussed joint relations and cooperation between Iraq and the European Union, in addition to the file of the displaced and the upcoming early parliamentary elections.
