Basra MP for Basra Governorate, Kadhem Finjan Al-Hamami, announced that the members of the Baseline Committee officially charged with establishing our borders and maintaining our sovereign extensions in our regional sea completed their mission today, Monday, in a manner that guarantees Iraq’s rights in its waters and shipping lanes.
Al-Hamami said in a press statement that the committee succeeded in calculating the baseline coordinates of the Iraqi regional sea from the farthest point observed when the water drops in the lower islands along our coasts, with the adoption of the farthest end of the breakwater in the great port of Faw as a sovereign point indicative of the baseline, and in order to Iraq will be able to obtain larger and wider water areas in Khor Abdullah and Khor Al-Faqqa.
He stressed, “the committee members’ cohesion and firm determination to maintain the baseline point at the end of the Shatt al-Arab external dam in accordance with the provisions of the Algiers Agreement of 1975 and in a manner that guarantees the protection of Iraqi territorial waters from Iran’s side.”
