Defense Ministry: Exhumation of the remains of Iraqi martyrs of the first Gulf War in four provinces

Baghdad, The Ministry of Defense announced the exhumation of the remains of Iraqi martyrs of the first Gulf War (1980-1988).

A statement by the Ministry stated that: “In continuation of the joint digging operations with the Iranian side, to search for the missing Iraqis and Iranians as a result of the first Gulf War (1980-1988), and in reference to the two memorandums of understanding signed between the Islamic Republics of Iraq and Iran in the year 2008, for the period from December 18, 2022 to on January 9, 2023, under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Ministry of Defense, represented by the Legal Department – Directorate of Human Rights, exhumed 12 remains, 3 of Iraqi martyrs, including an Iraqi martyr with known identity, and 9 Iranian remains, including 6 remains of unknown identity, in operations sectors (Basra, Maysan, Wasit, and Diyala).

The statement indicated that the remains were deposited in the remains preservation warehouses in the Martyrs Receipt and Delivery Division in Basra, in preparation for their transfer to the forensic medicine department in the capital, Baghdad, to complete the medical examinations.
