The European Union's Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mugherini confirmed Europe's support for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that Turkey will not strengthen its security through the military operation in northern Syria.
In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Mugherini said: "The issue cannot be resolved by opening new fronts, because real security must be based on a political solution reached through negotiations," the military operation in northern Syria will not make Turkey safer .
"Fighting should not make peace unattainable, and we must focus on combating terrorist organizations set by the United Nations, Turkey, as a guarantor of the Astana process, plays an important role and bears a special responsibility in this regard.
Since the 20th of last January, Turkish forces have been carrying out Operation Olive Branch against Kurdish militants in the northern city of Afrin.
Damascus strongly condemned the Turkish operation in Afrin, while Moscow called on all parties to exercise restraint and respect the territorial integrity of Syria.
