Baghdad Minister of Foreign Affairs Fouad Hussein said that the phenomenon of migration and displacement the world is witnessing from time to time due to the challenges people suffer from that target their security and stability.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Minister met with the European Commission of Internal Affairs – Minister of the Interior – Elva Johansson, via closed-circuit television, and during the meeting, they discussed the situation of Iraqi migrants and asylum seekers to the European Union, explaining that migrants need care from the European Union, and help them to reduce their suffering, and finding joint mechanisms to start a dialogue regarding asylum seekers in the European Union countries who have obtained return decisions from the European Union.

The Minister indicated that the phenomenon of migration and displacement witnessed by the world from time to time; because of the challenges people suffer from that target their security and stability.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs commended the governments that received Iraqi immigrants, considering it a humanitarian act, adding that we look with all respect and appreciation for any country that opened its lands to Iraqi immigrants, and we consider it a positive position.

He pointed out that the Iraqi constitution provides for freedom of movement and travel for the Iraqi citizen, stressing the need to secure the requirements of Iraqi refugees, explaining that Iraq encourages and supports the voluntary return of citizens who wish to return and rejects forced return.

For her part, Elva Johansson offered her condolences to the government and people of Iraq for the tragic fire of Imam Hussein Hospital (peace be upon him) in Nasiriyah, which killed dozens of citizens.

Johansson stressed that, the European Commission supports the voluntary return and provides assistance in the return of migrants and their integration into society upon their return.
