Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, reiterated his call to the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan to stop fighting and commit to a permanent cessation of hostilities.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement that the Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the situation in Darfur, and reports of widespread violence and casualties across the region, particularly in El Geneina, West Darfur state, as well as other areas such as Nyala. in South Darfur and Kutum and El Fasher in North Darfur, as a result of the military escalation between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
Guterres reaffirmed his call to the warring parties in Sudan to stop the fighting and commit to a permanent cessation of hostilities, stressing their duty to protect civilians.
Since last April 15, violent and large-scale clashes have been taking place between the Sudanese army forces and the Rapid Support Forces in separate areas across Sudan, as each of the two parties is trying to control vital headquarters, including the Republican Palace, the headquarters of the General Command of the Armed Forces, the leadership of the Rapid Support Forces, and a number of military and civilian airports.
