Baghdad The Office of the High Commission for Human Rights in Basra demanded today, Thursday, the Ministry of Interior to tighten control over the procedures for arrest, investigation and detention of the accused.
The office said in a statement, “after field monitoring, visits, and careful follow-up to detention centers and the extent to which human rights regulations are enforced in Basra Governorate, we call on the Ministry of Interior to tighten oversight measures on all investigative procedural bodies.”
It called for “the implementation of the decisions of the Supreme Judicial Council in the investigation file, which is carried out by law enforcement officials, and work on their continuous training, especially on human rights articles in arrest, investigation and pre-trial detention.”
It stressed the need to “follow up on the reports issued by the Office of the High Commission for Human Rights in Basra, which is the supervisory body that operates in accordance with the articles of the constitution and Law No. 53 of the High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq No. 53 of 2008 amended in the enforcement of pre-trial detention regulations, and to work to facilitate the tasks of defense lawyers.”
The Office of the High Commissioner urged the Ministry of Interior to “investigate the recent reports submitted by the Human Rights Division in Basra, which is affiliated with the Office of the Minister of Interior.”
During the last period, Basra witnessed the deaths of people detained by the police on suspicion of them, which sparked a wave of anger at the popular and official levels, and at that time the Ministry of Interior, the Government and the Judicial Authority formed investigative committees
