Iranian elections started

Baghdad The voting process began on Friday morning in Iran to elect a new President of the Republic.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei, cast his vote at 7:30 am in Imam Khomeini’s Hosseiniya in central Tehran, thus launching the voting process.

Khamenei reiterated his call for Iranians to participate massively in the voting process and to carry out this “duty” as soon as possible, stressing that broad participation would allow “the country and the Islamic Republic’s political system to achieve additional gains on the international scene.”

The head of the Iranian electoral body said that the results of the presidential elections will be announced before noon on Saturday, noting that the number of voters is about fifty-nine million.

He explained that there are about sixty-seven thousand polling stations in the cities and more than seventy-five thousand ballot boxes distributed in various villages.

Hojjat al-Islam Raisi (60 years old), who has held the presidency of the judiciary since 2019, is competing with three other candidates, and is the most likely to win a four-year term to succeed Rouhani, whose constitution prevents him from running for this session after two consecutive terms.
