Iraq Chairs The 19th Meeting Of The Arab Women’s Organization, Held In Egypt

Baghdad Iraq chaired the nineteenth meeting of the Arab Women’s Organization, held for the period from 23-25 November in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

A statement by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers stated: The Director General of the Department of Empowerment of Iraqi Women in the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Yusra Karim Mohsen, indicated in her opening speech at the meeting that women in Arab countries are still engaged in a continuous struggle to obtain their rights socially, economically and politically and with all the challenges that they face, Arab women suffer at the level of legal, procedural, organizational and administrative frameworks and the level of social interaction, which is in crisis with negative thought and culture against women.

Karim praised the national efforts of women in Arab countries to enhance and develop the reality of Arab women in various sectors and work to achieve their basic rights guaranteed by international and regional human rights covenants and codified by the constitutions of countries within their texts.

The meeting discussed the latest developments in the situation of women in the member states, reviewing the activities carried out by the general administration of the organization, the financial report, the obligations of the member states, the final accounts, scheduling the arrears of member states in the organization’s budget, requests for exemption from them, the relationship between the organization and the League of Arab States, and developments in research on the issue of amending the agreement establishing the organization and completing purchase transactions.

The meeting touched on the Arab indicative plan to reduce the impact of pandemics on women and girls and a proposal to organize events on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Arab Women Organization.

In the same context, Karim chaired an exceptional high-level meeting of the aforementioned organization to consult on a proposal to be submitted to the Security Council on empowering women and girls victims of violence and terrorism during conflicts, in which she reviewed Iraq’s achievements in support of women survivors, the most important of which is the Yazidi Survivors Law No. (8) of 2021, as a national initiative to support Women or girls who have been subjected to violent crimes.

The meeting concluded by assigning the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to chair a working group that will document the national plans and programs of the member states and the measures taken by them in this regard, and submit the working paper to the Arab Women Organization.
