Iraq Prepares for Local Elections with Expanded Security Meeting

Baghdad, In preparation for the upcoming local elections, the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Qais Al-Muhammadawi, emphasized the need for coordination among various security sectors. This statement came as part of a series of expanded meetings with security leaders, focusing on the safe conduct of the elections.

According to National Iraqi News Agency (NINA), Lieutenant General Al-Muhammadawi, Chairman of the Supreme Security Committee for the 2023 Elections, continues to engage in extensive meetings with security and intelligence leaders and members of the Independent High Electoral Commission. The meetings, held at the command headquarters, aim to finalize security, military, and technical procedures for the elections. An expanded meeting via closed-circuit television included police commanders from Wasit, Diwaniyah, Babylon, Najaf, and Muthanna, highlighting the Ministry of Interior’s role in managing the security file for these governorates.

Al-Muhammadawi stressed the importance of coordination and cooperation between the army, police, Popular Mobilization Forces, and various intelligence and security agencies. He focused on the plans for deploying security forces and ensuring their presence at polling stations. Emphasizing the shared responsibility in implementing security duties, he aligned with the directives of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Prime Minister, highlighting the collective effort required to ensure a secure and fair electoral process in Iraq.
