BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani has disclosed measures against corruption, including the pursuit of high-ranking officials accused of embezzling funds, and discussed the signing of substantial investment contracts.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, In a piece published by The Guardian, as reported by the official agency, Al-Sudani outlined the government’s focus over the past year on fulfilling the Iraqi people’s aspirations by attending to fundamental needs, with particular emphasis on improving foreign investment, fortifying the private sector, and crucial sectors such as education and healthcare. The Prime Minister affirmed Iraq’s commitment to enhancing its international standing, noting the government’s strategic steps in safeguarding political and economic security in the region through partnerships.
Al-Sudani highlighted the government’s request to Interpol for the arrest and extradition of former officials involved in a major tax embezzlement case exceeding $2.5 billion. He remarked on the recovery of a significant portion of the stolen funds and the intention to prosecute those accountable, underlining the need for continued international cooperation.
He also pointed to Iraq’s growing attractiveness to international investors, particularly in the energy sector, and referenced major investment deals signed within the government’s first year — signs of burgeoning global confidence in the Iraqi economy. Al-Sudani stated that Iraq’s position will aid in fostering regional prosperity.
On security issues, Al-Sudani reassured that ISIS has been significantly diminished in Iraq, although acknowledging their presence in isolated areas. He highlighted the success of Iraqi special forces in thwarting planned ISIS attacks in Europe, including the UK, and reiterated the resolve to eradicate the threat of ISIS with international collaboration.
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance, advocating for a swift resolution to the crisis and underscoring Iraq’s participation in the Cairo Peace Summit to promote regional stability and cooperation.
