Measures of the Ministry of Environment to deal with any damage that may affect the Ukrainian nuclear facilities

Baghdad The Ministry of Environment announced today, Monday, that it has taken measures to confront any damage that may affect the Ukrainian nuclear facilities.

A statement by the Ministry stated that the Radiation Protection Center and its executive arms represented by the radiation protection divisions in the environment directorates in all governorates of Iraq have taken the appropriate measures to confront any emergency.

He pointed out that the state of alert for the radiological detection and early warning capabilities has been continuously raised to monitor any changes that are indicated in the values of the radioactive dose rates received from the sub-systems in the governorates.

The statement quoted the Director-General of the Radiation Protection Center, Sabah Al-Husseini, as saying that the technical staff of the center has been put on alert and in response to any emergency incident that could happen since the first day of the start of military operations, especially after the events witnessed by the closed Chernobyl nuclear plant and the Zaporizhia nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine.

He added that the center is in continuous contact with the International Atomic Energy Agency through the network of the International Radiological Monitoring Information System (IRMIS) and the Unified System for Information Exchange (USIE), to receive and evaluate information on developments.

Al-Husseini indicated that there is no indication of radioactive contamination in the Iraqi airspace, and that the radioactive background rates are within the normal limits.
