Baghdad The United Nations representative in Iraq, Jennin Hennis-Plasschaert, confirmed that the decision to boycott the Iraqi elections scheduled for next October “is not an effective strategy”, whether for voters or politicians.
In a briefing to the UN Security Council in New York on the situation in Iraq, Plasschaert said that “the October elections have the potential to be different from the 2018 elections,” noting that “the credibility of the October elections will be essential to the future of Iraq.”
She added that “boycotting the elections is not an effective strategy, whether for voters or politicians,” noting that “the number of United Nations staff members currently involved in the elections is 5 times those who worked in the 2018 elections.”
