Plasschaert: The strength of the Kurdistan region will be the basis for the strength of Iraq, domestically and globally

Baghdad The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, confirmed that the strength of the Kurdistan region will be the basis for the strength of Iraq, not only on the local level, but also on the global scale, without a doubt.

Plasschaert said in a speech at the Unity and Constitution Conference that was held at Kurdistan University in Erbil, that “this federal entity required a lot of time and sacrifices, but that rights anywhere in the world do not come easily,” stressing that “the unity of the Kurdistan region is a guarantee of its survival.”

According to Plasschaert, the Kurdistan region “has become widely diversified and multi-religious and multilingual, and this is what was made clear during the recent visit of Pope Francis,” noting that “we can say that the great strength and recovery in the Kurdistan region stems from diversity and that the union of opposites was one of its main reasons.”

The UN Representative in Iraq considered that “the strength of the Kurdistan region will be the basis for the strength of Iraq, not only on the local level, but also on the global scale without a doubt.”

Plasschaert called for internal unity in the Kurdistan region, saying that “there should be no divisions along party lines anymore.”

She added that the problems and concerns facing the Kurdistan region and Iraq, including internal unity and the upcoming elections – are what made Iraq “at a crossroads.”

Plasschaert said that the constitution must conform to the federal constitution of Iraq that was approved in 2005, adding that “the final document must conform to the Iraqi federal constitution.”

Today, Wednesday, Kurdistan University – Erbil, for regional and international research, is organizing a special conference entitled “Unity and the Constitution.”
