Baghdad The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, stressed the importance of providing support to the displaced who are still in displacement camps, and seeking for their voluntary return to ensure a decent life and an adequate living situation.
Salih said during his meeting with the delegation of the United Nations Population Fund headed by the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund Ip Petersen: “The country has faced the challenge of terrorism and the resulting internal displacement crises, and social and demographic consequences.”
Salih pointed to the importance of providing support to the displaced who are still in displacement camps and seeking for their voluntary return to ensure a decent life and an adequate living situation.
Salih pointed to the importance of developing a population policy that achieves the sustainable development goals, based on the population, especially the youth, who constitute the largest proportion of the population, and represent an important workforce that should be utilized and provided with opportunities to engage in the labor market, pointing at the same time to the need to support women and stop cases of violence and to guarantee their full rights.
During the meeting, they discussed relations between Iraq and the United Nations Population Fund, through the relevant ministries and government institutions, and the importance of developing and strengthening them with regard to population development.
