Salih: Next Sunday’s Vote Is An Opportunity To Establish The National Will And The Independence And Sovereignty Of Iraqis Without Custodianship

Baghdad The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, affirmed that the vote next Sunday is an opportunity to consolidate the national will and the independence and sovereignty of Iraqis without any authority or tutelage.

A presidential statement stated: “Today, Barham Salih visited the Independent High Electoral Commission and personally supervised a simulation of the elections, and held a meeting with the President and members of the Commission’s Council and the Head of the United Nations Mission, Jenin Plasschaert, about the latest preparations underway to organize the legislative elections next Sunday, and was briefed on the progress of work.” He supervised a simulation of the elections, which included the procedures followed for the voting process and for the voters to cast their votes.

The President said in a press conference: “The upcoming elections are pivotal and a turning point in the history of Iraq, and we hope that they will be the starting point for a reform project that meets the aspirations of Iraqis for a rational rule. Pointing out that the approval of the elections came in response to widespread popular demands for reform, stressing the need to provide the appropriate environment to preserve the will of Iraqis to decide their future on their own without, guardianship or interference.

Salih added: “Next Sunday will be an opportunity to consolidate the national will and confirm the Iraqis’ independence and sovereignty and their launch towards real reforms that meet their legitimate rights, and towards a new situation in Iraq by which we solve the country’s accumulated problems and move towards what we want for our country to be free, independent, sovereign and live in security with its people and with its neighbors, and a government that works to harness the country’s resources for its citizens.”

For his part, the Head of the Electoral Commission, Judge Jalil Adnan, extended his thanks and appreciation to the President of the Republic for his support of the Commission in conducting fair elections, as well as to the Prime Minister and the United Nations Mission, referring to the efforts made by the Commission during the past two years to organize the polls.

For her part, the head of the United Nations mission, Jenin Plasschaert, said that today’s meeting with the President of the Republic at the Electoral Commission building was an important meeting, wishing the Iraqis success in the elections.
