Baghdad - The Spanish Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis Quecedo said that his country is a friend of Iraq and stood by Him in its difficult circumstances and the war against terrorism and Iraq can rely on Spain in various fields.
"Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari met his Spanish counterpart Alfonso Dastis in the Spanish capital Madrid, who said that his country is in a single trench to confront terrorism and will play an active role in reconstructing the infrastructure of Iraqi cities and returning Iraq to take its great role in the region and the world," a statement for the ministry said.
"We will urge Spanish companies to invest and contribute to support projects and infrastructure in Iraq, and we will look into a new mechanism to facilitate the granting of visas to Iraqis wishing to visit Spain," the statement added.
For his part, al-Jaafari said during the meeting that Iraq looks forward to establishing the best relations with Spain and increasing the volume of trade exchange and coordination in all fields. He pointed out that the geographical dimension is no longer an obstacle to the establishment of relations between countries because today's relations are based on promoting common interests and facing common dangers. "He said.
He added: "We look forward to activating the work of the technical committees and preparing and speeding up the meeting of the Joint Iraqi-Spanish Committee because of its significant impact in deepening the bilateral relations between Baghdad and Madrid and the continued support of friendly countries to Iraq financially, humanely and service and contribute to the reconstruction of infrastructure of Iraqi cities after the elimination of Daesh."
He called on the importance of facilitating the granting of entry visas to Iraqi students and businessmen wishing to visit Spain, which will enhance efforts to open an air route between Baghdad and Madrid, while appreciating Spain's support for Iraq in the international forums and supporting Iraq in the war against Daesh gangs.
The two sides discussed the security and political developments and the efforts of the Iraqis and their victories against the terrorist gangs supported by the International Coalition. They signed memorandums of understanding to enhance and train cadres of the ministry and political consultations between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Ibrahim Jaafari arrived in the Spanish capital Madrid on Sunday.
"Jaafari's visit to Madrid comes at the invitation of a number of Spanish officials and to represent Iraq at the international conference on the victims of sectarian and ethnic violence, which will be hosted by the Spanish capital with the participation of a large number of countries in the world," a foreign ministry statement said.
