The PM of the Kurdistan Regional discusses by phone with the Vice-President of the European Commission the refugee situation

Baghdad The PM of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, received, on Tuesday evening, a phone call from the Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas, and during the phone call, they discussed the situation of migrants at the borders between Poland and Belarus.

The PM urged Vice-President of the European Commission to mobilize the full support of the European Union to provide urgent humanitarian relief to the stranded families.

The two sides agreed, according to a statement by the regional government, that international smuggling networks used migrants for political purposes, while the Prime Minister indicated that more than 400 citizens returned to their homes voluntarily, and expected more arrivals soon.

The Prime Minister called for long-term strategic cooperation between the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the European Union to curb illegal immigration.

Barzani also called on the Vice-President of the European Commission to enhance trade and investment with Europe and to provide technical and financial support for the reform program initiated by the Kurdistan Regional Government.
