Baghdad The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and the PM of the Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, met on Friday evening, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as part of his participation in the Munich Security Conference.
The regional government stated in a statement, “at the meeting, a summary of the latest developments in the political situation and the Iraqi situation in general was presented.”
The President of the Kurdistan Region and the Prime Minister thanked the United Nations for its support to Iraq, especially the role of (UNAMI) in the Iraqi elections, and expressed their hope that the United Nations would continue its support and assistance to address the problems in Iraq.
The meeting dealt with the latest developments on combating terrorism and ISIS threats and dangers. The two sides indicated that ISIS still represents a serious and real threat, threatening security and stability in Iraq and Syria.
The meeting discussed the importance of coordination between Erbil and Baghdad in confronting terrorism, and it was stressed the need for everyone to work to establish security and stability in Iraq, because the lack of security and stability would corrode the political process, and the United Nations can provide assistance in this regard, according to the statement.
The desire of the Kurdistan region to hold the elections on time was also discussed, in addition to the recent decision of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court regarding the oil and gas file in the Kurdistan region, and the possibility of the Secretary-General of the United Nations visiting Iraq after the formation of the new federal government.
