The US National Intelligence Director Dan Coates said that the terrorist organization “Daesh” is still a threat despite the recent defeats in Syria and Iraq.

“The defeat of the terrorist organization is like the killing of Akhtaboot,” Dan Coates told International Leaders, Diplomats and Defense officials at a security conference in Munich.

“More than just a terrorist organization, it is an ideology and perhaps a (religious) belief, and a combination of ideology and belief continues beyond defeats on the battlefield,” he said.

“It is not clear at this stage whether we have done enough to prevent a re-establishment of itself, or whether we are just at a moment when they are regrouping,” he added.

The Director of national intelligence also said the current assessment was “that it would still form a threat.
