BAGHDAD, The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will open a military base in Iraq this fall, the commander of the US Central Command in the Middle East, General Joseph Votel, has announced.
“The key role of the base will be training and other benefits,” he said.
He continued, “I believe that the opening of the base will have an impact on the development of Iraqi security forces and contribute to overall security sector reforms initiated by the Iraqis.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced NATO’s agreement to establish a non-combat mission in Iraq led by Canada to train Iraqi forces.
