Kuala lumpur: Malaysian authorities announced on Monday the end of the search for migrants, mostly from the Rohingya minority, who went missing after their boat sank eleven days ago off the coasts of Thailand and Malaysia. The search concluded after the recovery of 36 bodies in one of the worst shipwrecks in the region in recent years.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the boat capsized on November 6 near the Thai island of Tarutau as the migrants attempted to reach Malaysia. Rescue teams managed to save 14 people. Authorities estimate the vessel was carrying around 70 Rohingya migrants fleeing persecution in Myanmar.

Zainuddin Mohamed Zuki, Deputy Director of operations for the Maritime Safety Agency in Kedah and Perlis states, said search teams would suspend operations at 6:30 p.m. local time, adding that efforts would resume if new leads emerged.

Malaysian rescue teams recovered 29 bodies, while Thai teams recovered seven more. They believe the ill-fated boat was part of a larger group of around 300 migrants who traveled on several vessels during their sea voyage.
