Kabul: An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck northeastern Afghanistan early Wednesday morning.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre stated in a statement that the earthquake occurred in the Hindu Kush region. It had a depth of 121 kilometers, with its epicenter located 164 kilometers east of the city of Baghlan, which has a population of more than 100,000.

No immediate reports of casualties or material damage have been reported as a result of the earthquake. In October 2023, a series of earthquakes measuring up to 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Herat Province in western Afghanistan.
