6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Southern Philippines Coast

Manila: A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines, according to the US Geological Survey. The seismic event prompted no tsunami warning, and there were no immediate reports of damage.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the earthquake was initially recorded by the USGS as a 6.7 magnitude quake. It occurred at a depth of 58.5 kilometers and was centered about 27 kilometers east of Santiago on Mindanao Island.

Eastern Mindanao had previously experienced significant seismic activity in October, with two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.4 and 6.7, which resulted in the loss of at least eight lives.

Days before this incident, a devastating 6.9 magnitude earthquake claimed 76 lives and caused damage or destruction to 72,000 homes in Cebu province, located in the central Philippines, based on government figures.

The Philippines frequently experiences earthquakes as it is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for intense seismic activity extending from Japan through
Southeast Asia to the Pacific basin.
