UNIFIL: Israeli troops and tanks forcibly entered a United Nations site in Lebanon, causing injuries among peacekeepers.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported a significant breach by Israeli military forces this Sunday. Early in the morning, UNIFIL peacekeepers stationed at a site in Ramieh observed three platoons of Israeli soldiers crossing the Blue Line from Israel into Lebanon. The situation escalated when two Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Merkava tanks destroyed the site’s main gate, entered the premises, and demanded the lights be turned off. This confrontation lasted approximately 45 minutes, during which UNIFIL protested through its liaison mechanism, highlighting the dangers posed to its peacekeepers.
The conflict continued as peacekeepers at the same location later reported gunfire approximately 100 meters to the north around 6:40 a.m., resulting in heavy smoke. The smoke infiltration caused skin irritation and stomach problems among
15 peacekeepers, who are currently receiving necessary medical treatment. Additionally, on the previous day, IDF soldiers halted a critical logistical movement by UNIFIL near Meiss al-Jabal, further complicating the peacekeeping mission’s operations.
UNIFIL has issued a reminder to the Israeli military regarding their obligations under international law, specifically citing resolution 1701 (2006), which demands the safety and security of UN personnel and property. The statement from UNIFIL also stressed that any restrictions on their freedom of movement constitute violations of the same resolution, and it has formally requested an explanation from the Israeli military regarding these incidents.
