Iraqi Ministries Offer Rewards for Information on Missing Persons from Gulf War

BAGHDAD: The Iraqi Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs have announced a new initiative offering financial rewards to individuals who can provide information regarding the whereabouts of Iraqis and Kuwaitis missing since the Second Gulf War in 1991. This initiative aims to resolve the long-standing issue of missing persons by involving citizens in the recovery process.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the joint statement from the ministries emphasized the importance of community participation in uncovering the burial sites of those who vanished during the conflict. The ministries have provided several contact numbers and an email address through which individuals can submit information. Those who provide useful information that leads to the identification of burial sites will receive a financial reward. Contact points include the Human Rights Directorate in the Ministry of Defense, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and various Kuwaiti diplomatic missions in Iraq, along with a toll-free numb
er for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Baghdad.

The announcement reflects ongoing efforts by Iraqi and Kuwaiti authorities to address the painful legacy of the Gulf War, which resulted in significant casualties and a large number of missing persons. By offering a financial incentive, the ministries aim to engage a wider audience in their search and bring closure to families who have waited decades for news of their loved ones.
