Cairo: Al-Azhar Al-Sharif issued a strong condemnation today regarding the German Foreign Minister’s purported support for the bombing of civilians in Gaza. In a vehement statement, the institution expressed deep regret over the minister’s comments, which it described as a “moral and political setback” and an endorsement of “Zionist terrorism.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Azhar highlighted the German Foreign Minister’s statements as a severe deviation from expected diplomatic stances, particularly from a senior official of Germany. The statement accused the minister of providing “a political fatwa that allows criminals to practice killing innocent civilians,” emphasizing the gravity of such endorsements on civilian lives, including children, women, and youths. Al-Azhar warned that these remarks represent a dangerous precedent that could undermine international mediation efforts aimed at halting the ongoing aggression in Gaza, which has persisted for over a year.
Further, Al-Azhar criticized
the contradiction inherent in the German Foreign Minister’s statements, given Germany’s recent history of accepting refugees from conflict zones around the world. The institution suggested that such statements could tarnish Germany’s humanitarian reputation and highlighted the inconsistency between Germany’s refugee policies and the endorsement of military actions against civilians.
Al-Azhar’s statement serves as a reminder to the German Foreign Minister of the broader implications of her support for such actions, urging a reconsideration of Germany’s stance in favor of a more humanitarian approach consistent with its previous policies.
