Baghdad: The Iraqi Presidency today issued a statement clarifying its position on the ratification of death sentences for terrorism-related crimes, amid circulating rumors about mass issuances of presidential decrees. The presidency affirmed its commitment to lawful procedures and its resolve to address terrorism firmly.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the statement from the Presidency of the Republic came in response to allegations spread by “suspicious pages” linked to individuals wanted by the judiciary and intelligence services from the era of the former regime. These sources falsely claimed that the presidency had issued decrees en masse to ratify death sentences against those convicted of terrorist acts.
The presidency emphasized that these rumors were part of a malicious campaign aimed at destabilizing the country and stirring unrest amid challenging regional circumstances. It stated, “The Presidency of the Republic will not hesitate to perform its duties in ratifying death sentences against
terrorists whose hands were stained with the blood of innocent Iraqis, after the ruling has completed all legal procedures of cassation, retrial, and presenting to the Special Pardon Committee.”
The statement also highlighted the president’s dedication to upholding the constitution and ensuring that all legal measures are exhausted before any final decision is made. It also pointed out that the misinformation spread by these suspicious pages is a calculated attempt by individuals negatively impacted by the fall of the dictatorial regime and the defeat of ISIS to sow discord.
Moreover, the presidency urged those convicted or their relatives, who have unfinished legal procedures, to submit their requests for review to ensure that justice is served appropriately. It also called on media outlets and the public to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it to avoid inadvertently aiding those who wish to harm Iraq and its people.
