Demonstrations in Nasiriyah Lead to Injuries; Dhi Qar Council Launches Calming Initiative

NASIRIYAH: A demonstration in the city of Nasiriyah, located in the province of Dhi Qar, resulted in injuries to 22 police officers and members amid escalating riots. The Dhi Qar Police Command reported that the injuries occurred as some rioters attacked the forces assigned to protect the demonstrators.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the demonstration, which took place at 3 p.m. on Friday, was initially peaceful but turned violent, leading to the hospitalization of three officers and 19 police members. The Dhi Qar Police Command had been providing full protection for the demonstrators when the situation escalated.

In response to the unrest, a member of the Dhi Qar Provincial Council, Ahmed Al-Khafaji, introduced a new initiative aimed at defusing the tensions and addressing the demonstrators’ concerns within legal parameters. Al-Khafaji stated that the initiative is supported by the Provincial Council and was presented in the presence of MPs Alaa Al-Rikabi and Ghazwane Al-Ghazi.

The initiative ou
tlines several measures, including reclassifying charges against the demonstrators from terrorism crimes to lesser offenses handled by local police stations. It also calls for the surrender of wanted demonstrators to police stations for legal proceedings, the settlement of detainee cases, and the release of individuals whose bail is accepted. Furthermore, cases involving personal rights will remain under judicial jurisdiction for resolution according to the law.
