CAIRO: The Arab League is set to convene an emergency meeting on Tuesday at its Cairo headquarters to discuss strategies to halt what it describes as Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. The meeting, called by Palestine, will assemble permanent representatives to deliberate on actions to counter Israeli military operations in the region.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the Palestinian envoy to the Arab League, Muhannad Al-Aklouk, requested the meeting in response to escalating violence and alleged crimes against Palestinians. Al-Aklouk emphasized the Arab League’s historical responsibility to respond to what he termed unprecedented Israeli actions, including mass killings, forced displacement, and a humanitarian crisis.
The situation has been exacerbated by Israel’s refusal to allow humanitarian aid into northern Gaza, as reported by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). The Israeli military operation, now in its 18th day, has been marked by a severe siege and has resulted in significan
t casualties and displacement.
The conflict, which followed a Hamas attack last year, has reportedly led to the deaths of over 42,600 individuals, primarily women and children, and injured nearly 99,800 others. The ongoing blockade has triggered acute shortages of essential supplies, including food, water, and medical resources.
Israel’s actions are currently under scrutiny at the International Court of Justice, where it faces a genocide case related to its military operations in Gaza.
