Israeli Foreign Minister Suggests Lebanon Could Normalize Relations with Israel Following Saudi Agreement

ROME: Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has suggested that Lebanon might join the normalization of relations with Israel if a deal is reached with Saudi Arabia. Katz discussed these prospects during a meeting with his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, emphasizing the potential role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in post-conflict arrangements.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Katz expressed Israel’s interest in involving UNIFIL more effectively to counter Hezbollah’s influence in Lebanon. He indicated that UNIFIL’s current operations are insufficient and called for a more assertive mandate. During their discussions, Tajani acknowledged the challenges faced by the 1,000 Italian soldiers stationed with UNIFIL in southern Lebanon and conveyed that Italy would support a change in the mandate to enhance enforcement capabilities.

Tajani also addressed the issue of Palestinian state recognition, affirming Italy’s stance against recognizing a Palestinian state without an ag
reement with Israel. He labeled Hamas as a terrorist organization and confirmed that Italy maintains no contact with them.

In addition to his diplomatic engagements in Italy, Katz is scheduled to meet with Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi in Rome. His itinerary also includes a visit to the Vatican, where he will meet Pope Francis alongside the families of Israeli captives held in Gaza.
