BAGHDAD: The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, has called on the United Nations to enhance its efforts in halting aggression against the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, and to provide much-needed assistance to displaced individuals. This appeal came during a meeting at Baghdad Palace with the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, alongside his deputy, Claudio Cordone. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Special Representative conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to President Rashid, who reciprocated with his own greetings and well-wishes. President Rashid welcomed Al-Hassan, congratulating him on his new role and assuring him of the Iraqi Presidency's support in fulfilling his duties. The meeting also covered Iraq's dedication to enhancing cooperation with the UN and its organizations, and addressed the political and economic climate in Iraq, with a focus on security, human rights, and clim ate change issues. The President emphasized Iraq's commitment to bolstering security and stability, while implementing a government program aimed at improving citizens' living conditions. He reiterated Iraq's support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for the Palestinians' right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state, and expressed solidarity with Lebanon. The UN official, Al-Hassan, expressed enthusiasm about his new role and the potential for strengthening relations that align with the UN's goals in Iraq. He outlined the future activities of the International Mission to Assist Iraq (UNAMI), affirming the UN's readiness to support Iraq across various sectors, including development, education, and humanitarian assistance, thereby reinforcing the cooperative ties between Iraq and the UN.
