Baghdad: Today, newspapers issued in Baghdad reported on Iraq’s participation in the upcoming Islamic Summit in Riyadh, as well as the status of legislation concerning the right to access information and freedom of expression.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sabah newspaper highlighted that the conflict in Gaza and Lebanon will be central to discussions at the Islamic Summit, which is expected to convene next week. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani will represent Iraq, reaffirming its principled stance against the Zionist aggression in Palestine and Lebanon. The discussions aim to seek a comprehensive solution, emphasizing the cessation of aggression and the implementation of binding international resolutions to prevent further genocidal acts by the entity.
Al-Sabah noted that the Riyadh Summit is set against the backdrop of escalating tensions in Lebanon and Gaza, potential confrontations between Iran and the opposing entity, and the U.S. presidential elections. Iraq’s steadfast positions
and proactive measures by the Prime Minister are expected to significantly contribute to resolving this historical regional crisis with global implications due to the Middle East’s economic and geopolitical importance.
Al-Zawraa newspaper, which focuses on legislative issues, reported on the ongoing deliberations concerning the right to access information and freedom of expression laws. Rafiq Al-Salihi of the Parliamentary Culture Committee stated that the access to information law is under review, with experts involved in refining the draft for parliamentary consideration. He emphasized that any disagreements will be resolved by specialists before being publicly disclosed. Al-Salihi also mentioned that the law on peaceful demonstrations and freedom of expression is under review and will be addressed in the upcoming legislative session, ensuring it does not restrict citizens’ freedoms but clarifies the framework for demonstrations.
In the face of adverse weather conditions, Al-Zaman newspaper covered public
grievances regarding inadequate services amidst heavy rains. Citizens in Baghdad criticized government inefficiency in improving drainage infrastructure despite substantial financial investments. The recent rainstorms have caused damage and infrastructure failures, prompting public dissatisfaction and skepticism about the authorities’ ability to provide effective solutions. The newspaper highlighted the discrepancy between the announced preparations for rain management and the actual conditions, questioning the effectiveness of the funds allocated for these projects, which have failed to deliver tangible results year after year.
