Baghdad: The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, held a meeting with Mohammed Al-Hassan, the Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, to discuss significant regional and internal legislative matters.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the discussion focused on the recent amendment to the Personal Status Law approved by the Iraqi House of Representatives. Dr. Al-Mashhadani elaborated on the provisions and motives behind the amendment, which respects sectarian diversity by allowing followers of the Shiite sect to choose their marriage code, while the Sunni sect maintains the existing law without changes. The meeting also touched upon other proposed laws, particularly those concerning domestic violence, which are under consideration in the House committees.

In addition, the UN representative expressed willingness to assist with the proposed laws, especially those related to public freedoms and human rights, currently being reviewed by the House of Representatives.

The conversation extended to regional issues, particularly the situations in Syria and Palestine. The Speaker and the UN representative discussed the recent developments and the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Dr. Al-Mashhadani emphasized Iraq’s pivotal role in fostering regional peace, asserting that stability in Iraq is crucial for peace in the Middle East and, by extension, the world.

Furthermore, Dr. Al-Mashhadani called upon the United Nations to extend humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza to alleviate the impact of the conflict and initiate relief efforts for those affected.
