Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed strong condemnation over the recent incidents on the Beirut airport road, describing them as unacceptable actions that cannot be tolerated. He emphasized that security forces will act decisively against any attempts to disrupt stability in the region.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Aoun has been closely monitoring developments related to the roadblocks, arson, and riots that have erupted. He has issued directives to the army and security forces to cease these activities, ensure all roads are opened, and remove any obstacles from the streets. The president also highlighted the need to pursue those responsible for disturbing the peace, urging their arrest and referral to the judiciary, which has already begun its field investigations.
Furthermore, President Aoun condemned the attack on the convoy of the Deputy Commander of the UNIFIL peacekeeping forces, which occurred on the airport road, resulting in injuries to the officer. He assured that the perpetrators would face punishment. The president called on citizens to avoid being swayed by suspicious calls that could lead to similar incidents, emphasizing that all expressions of opinion must remain peaceful.
The unrest was sparked by demonstrators blocking the airport road and setting fire to a UNIFIL vehicle in protest against the recent prevention of an Iranian plane from landing at Beirut airport last Thursday.
