Baghdad: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, took part in a celebration organized by the Dream Organization for Sustainable Development to mark International Women’s Day and honor Iraqi women. During the event held at the historic Abbasid Palace in Baghdad, Al-Hassan emphasized the significant contributions and sacrifices made by Iraqi women through challenging times.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Mohammed Al-Hassan praised Iraqi women as an exemplary model throughout history, remarking on their deep-rooted civilizational legacy. He acknowledged the need for greater representation of Iraqi women in decision-making roles, highlighting their limited presence in such positions. Al-Hassan expressed his belief that it is time for Iraqi women to take on more significant responsibilities in leadership roles, envisioning possibilities like an Iraqi woman serving as President, Prime Minister, or Speaker of the Council of Representatives.

Al-Hassan also highlighted the Iraqi constitution as one of the most progressive in the region, providing ample opportunities for women to help shape the nation’s future. He stressed the importance of maintaining an honest judiciary, which he described as a foundational pillar of the nation.

Reflecting on Iraq’s cultural and social heritage, Al-Hassan called for leveraging the country’s unique character to create a roadmap towards a hopeful and civilized future where all Iraqis are equal citizens. He emphasized Iraq’s capacity to develop plans and visions that empower women while respecting cultural customs and traditions.

He concluded by affirming the continued support of the international community and the United Nations for Iraqi women and their aspirations. Al-Hassan urged Iraqis and decision-makers to safeguard the achievements made by Iraqi women thus far.
