President of the Republic Engages in Strategic Talks with UN Under-Secretary-General for ESCWA


Baghdad: President of the Republic Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid received today, Tuesday, at the Baghdad Palace, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Rola Dashti. During the meeting, they discussed opportunities for exchanging expertise in the field of development policies in various sectors, where the President of the Republic pointed out the importance of the technical advice offered by ESCWA and its logistical support.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Rashid emphasized Iraq’s pursuit of a fair share of water, highlighting the reduction in water flows through the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which has resulted in water scarcity in several cities. The President further elaborated on the necessity of joint efforts and regional coordination to enhance irrigation projects and implement modern water management techniques. He underscored the importance of understanding operational plans and projects of upstream countries and expressed the need to broaden cooperation between Iraq and ESCWA in economic, social, and environmental domains, alongside training and capacity building in natural resources management.



Rola Dashti reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations as a key partner in supporting Iraq towards achieving a more prosperous and sustainable future. She indicated the organization’s readiness to provide essential expertise and knowledge across various fields.
