Kyiv: The Ukrainian parliament failed to obtain sufficient support for a draft resolution reaffirming the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The draft resolution received 218 votes, falling short of the required 226 votes to pass, during a special session of the Ukrainian parliament held to commemorate the third anniversary of the war.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, about 54 members of parliament who were present in the meeting hall did not participate in the vote, including 38 representatives of the Servant of the People party led by Zelenskyy. The parliament leadership put forward the draft resolution as a symbolic show of support for Zelenskyy, whose legitimacy has been criticized by Russia.

Zelenskyy’s regular term is set to end in May 2024, but an election date cannot be set due to the ongoing martial law in Ukraine.
