Baghdad: Syria welcomed, on Tuesday, the European Union’s decision to suspend some of the sanctions imposed on it. The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that the decision represents a positive development and indicates progress towards constructive engagement between Syria and the international community.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the ministry called on all international partners to take further measures to lift the remaining sanctions that continue to hinder Syria’s recovery. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Sheibani expressed optimism about the decision. He stated via the (X) platform, “We have spent the past two months holding discussions and making diplomatic efforts to ease the sanctions, and we welcome the European Union’s decision to suspend some sanctions on specific sectors, and we see this as a step towards alleviating the suffering of our people.”

The European Union foreign ministers decided, at a meeting held in Brussels, to suspend restrictions imposed on Syria in the energy sector, which included oil, gas, electricity, and sanctions imposed on the transportation sector. The decision also included lifting the freeze on the assets of five banks, easing restrictions imposed on the Central Bank of Syria, and extending indefinitely an exemption to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
