Al-Sudani Advocates for Renewable Energy Projects to Transform Iraq’s Energy Generation


Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani emphasized the significance of renewable energy projects to facilitate the necessary transition in Iraq’s energy generation landscape. Al-Sudani chaired a meeting of the National Team for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Projects, where the team’s strategy to alleviate pressure on the national electrical grid and ensure sustainable energy production was discussed.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister’s media office released a statement detailing that the meeting reviewed the work plan aimed at reducing pressure on the national electrical grid, ensuring energy abundance, and promoting energy consumption rationalization. Al-Sudani highlighted the critical role of renewable energy projects, particularly solar energy, in achieving the transition in energy generation by leveraging clean energy and smart solutions.



Al-Sudani instructed the initiation of the government palace project, part of the energy-saving government buildings initiative, and announced the commencement of work on 164 inventoried government buildings nationwide for implementing energy-saving and alternative energy projects. The meeting also featured presentations on completed designs for the government palace and preparations for the solar station project for the Ministry of Interior, currently under referral.



The attendees showcased a special study for the Army Canal project, soon to be announced as an investment opportunity, which will generate 100 MW of clean energy. Plans for investment in smart solutions and the first pioneering solar energy project for homes in residential complexes were also discussed. Additionally, the smart solutions project will be launched in Muthanna and Anbar governorates, as well as other regions.



Efforts to integrate smart solutions into service and collection contracts for distribution companies have commenced, along with the preparation of technical requirements for solar stations. These initiatives form part of the broader strategy to reduce reliance on traditional fuels and decrease carbon emissions.
