Baghdad: The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee called for the removal of the draft law on the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), which is currently on its second reading, from the House of Representatives’ agenda until all required legislative procedures are completed. This is to ensure the adoption of a comprehensive law that serves the public interest, preserves the rights of Mujahedeen, and enhances institutional stability in the country.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the committee criticized the inclusion of the second reading of the draft law on the agenda due to the failure to adhere to the legal deadline. The committee explained that there must be a period of no less than 48 hours between the first and second readings of any draft law to ensure its thorough discussion. However, this period was not respected in this context.

The committee added that the draft law contains detailed tables and paragraphs that require in-depth study. Therefore, it was necessary to host the relevant party targeted by the law before proceeding with the second reading to ensure clarity of the technical, administrative, and organizational details.

The committee stressed the need to allocate sufficient time for discussions and completion of the necessary requirements, including holding meetings with relevant parties to ensure the law matures before its enactment. This includes fully committing to preserving the rights of the Popular Mobilization Forces’ Mujahedeen and ensuring that the law includes all legal and administrative privileges that are appropriate to their sacrifices, ensuring a decent and stable life for them and enhancing their national role within a clear and fair legal framework.
