Iraqi Diplomatic Efforts Highlighted in Call with Greek Foreign Minister

Baghdad: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein received a phone call from Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis on the eve of the NATO summit in The Hague. During the conversation, both parties emphasized the significance of diplomatic collaboration to ensure regional security and stability.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Greek Minister expressed his country’s high appreciation for the influential role of Iraqi diplomacy and Iraq’s prominent position in adopting a balanced policy amid the complex conflicts in the region. He underscored the necessity of strengthening ongoing cooperation between Iraq and Greece to prevent terrorist groups from exploiting current circumstances to regroup. Additionally, he condemned the recent terrorist attack on an Orthodox church in Damascus, highlighting the need for unified international efforts to combat terrorism.

Minister Fuad Hussein thanked the Greek Minister for initiating the contact and reiterated Iraq’s commitment to regional security and stability, viewing it as an integral duty and responsibility of Iraqi diplomacy. He noted the global decline in adherence to international law, with rising instances of force being used as a means of interaction between states. Hussein also warned of the potential for ongoing wars to spark new conflicts, citing the war on Gaza as a precursor to possible conflicts in Lebanon and extending to Iran.

Minister Hussein expressed support for the US ceasefire initiative and hoped for genuine commitment from all involved parties. On a bilateral level, he described Iraqi-Greek relations as “very good” and emphasized Iraq’s dedication to enhancing these ties across various domains.

The Greek Minister concluded the call by expressing gratitude for the productive dialogue and announced his plans to visit Iraq soon as part of a diplomatic, political, and economic mission, accompanied by Greek businessmen. Minister Fuad Hussein welcomed the forthcoming visit and expressed eagerness to host the Greek delegation in Baghdad, thanking the Greek Minister once again for the meaningful discussions.
