Oil Ministry Announces Plans to Zero-Eliminate Gas Flaring and Increase Production and Export of Liquid Gas


Baghdad: The Ministry of Oil announced today the government’s efforts to increase associated gas investment rates and reduce flaring rates, achieving zero flaring, while increasing production and export rates of liquid gas to generate additional financial revenues for the state treasury.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during a leadership meeting for the gas sector, attended by heads of relevant companies and departments at the ministry’s headquarters, the Undersecretary of the Ministry for Gas Affairs, Izzat Saber Ismail, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the investment rates of associated gas from oil fields. The aim is to minimize gas flaring to low levels, aspiring to reach zero flaring in the coming years, alongside increasing the production and export rates of liquefied natural gas to boost financial revenues.

Ismail highlighted that the gas investment sector has achieved significant production rates, with national companies increasing gas investment quantities to 71% throug
h several projects designed to align with the ministry’s plans. He acknowledged the support from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani al-Sawad, expressing optimism that the ministry will achieve its goals through cooperation with specialized international companies, particularly in fields like Maysan, Buzurgan, Gharraf, and Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar, as well as Artawi, Nahr Bin Omar, and the integrated gas project with Total in Basra.

The Undersecretary stressed the urgency of enhancing the storage capacity of liquefied gas by expediting ongoing and planned projects across several governorates. This is aimed at reinforcing the integrated infrastructure of the sector, which has seen progress in increasing production, storage, export, and distribution capacities.

He further noted the ministry’s recent success in implementing gas pipeline projects to power plants, which are designed to ensure optimal flow rates in the transport and pumping of gas. The meeting also reviewed the p
rojects being implemented within the Ministry’s programs and plans, examining completion percentages, production rates, storage capacity projects, pipeline networks, and the transportation of gas to power plants, among other agenda topics.
