Basra: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani concluded his visit to Basra Governorate. The visit featured an expanded meeting attended by ministers, governors of Basra, Dhi Qar, and Maysan, along with advisors and executive officials.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting reviewed the implementation procedures for the strategic seawater desalination project, which received approval from the Council of Ministers in May. The approval included Basra Governorate’s proposal to incorporate four additional desalination plant projects. These projects consist of the Shatt al-Arab District Desalination Plant with a capacity of 5,000 m3/hour, the Al-Faw and Al-Siba District Desalination Plant with a capacity of 3,000 m3/hour, the Abu Flus Desalination Plant also with a capacity of 3,000 m3/hour, and the Safwan Desalination Plant with a capacity of 1,000 m3/hour.

The meeting further examined government procedures related to wastewater treatment plants, particularly in the southern governorates, and discussed coordination mechanisms with Turkey on water management through joint projects. An increase in water releases from Turkey was announced, highlighting collaborative efforts in this domain.

The meeting emphasized the necessity of implementing Cabinet decisions from the previous session, focusing on securing an emergency budget for the completion of the Badaa Canal project and authorizing Basra Governorate to purchase water tankers. It also stressed the importance of strict measures to address violations along the rivers, advocating for no leniency in enforcement.

Additionally, a field visit was conducted to the Al-Abbas (RO) Water Station and the Badaa Canal basins in Basra, indicating a hands-on approach to addressing water management issues in the region.
